I used this book to prepare for my NMTCB certification- it is a very good book although it does not go into deep detail but is a great starter book. It has about 500 questions in the book with explanations for every answer. I would recommend it.

Great introduction of HTML 5 and CSS3 (and I mean Introduction). For a book just coming out: No mention of jquery, or any other framework that, yes are surfacing, but been around long enough for the author to know about them. Not even Dreamweaver's Jquery Mobile upgrade. Ordered several books this was the last to come. Like I said, the design elements are fitting for old school design. If it were 2002, this book perhaps would be a fit. Great introduction of HTML 5 and CSS3 (and I mean Introduction). For a book just coming out: No mention of jquery, or any other framework that, yes are surfacing, but been around long enough for the author to know about them. Not even Dreamweaver’s Jquery Mobile upgrade. Ordered several books this was the last to come. Like I said, the design elements are fitting for old school design. Sending back tomorrow?

I picked up this book knowing little to nothing about mobile Web design, or about Web design in general, for that matter. I liked that the book is task-oriented. It provides many real-world examples and projects that I easily adapted to my own projects. I was able to create a mobile site from beginning to end–without having to rely on other resources. This is exactly what I was looking for when shopping for a book on basic mobile design.

Granted, several technologies are not covered in this book, but then the title and descriptions do not advertise that they are covered. The title touts HTML, JavaScript and CSS for mobile development, and those topics are covered thoroughly with great everyday examples. The book also really gives you a solid understanding not only in XHTML necessary to build a website, but the steps to designing and structuring the layout as well. Really excellent.

I’ve made it through most of this book and while it has some good coding examples it lacks thorough explanations. If you’ve got a solid background in development and have done a little research on Rails you’ll pick up the content without too much suffering. I’ve been developing Java for 3 years with little to no web experience and I feel like I could struggle through my own project at this point, but there are better books out there.

I would suggest starting with Rails Foundations 2 and moving to this book later. The Foundations author does a superb job of explaining the rails framework, ActiveRecord, views, and controllers in the 1st 7 chapters before jumping into building an application. Overall that book and Simply Rails 2 strike a better balance between application development and instruction.
